Some things do not get easier. I knew it was coming, and I thought that I could get through this day better than in the last few years, but, it is still fresh in my mind. The sadness of September 11th lingers on.
I am writing this post a day early, so that I can join in with Julia's Hooked on Houses, Hooked on Friday's. I have become hooked on seasonal decorating. Especially for the Autumn and Winter months. On the screened porch, a vintage harvest motif tablecloth replacing the pink and red flowery one that was there.
On the mantle, orange Chinese Lantern flowers replaced the pussy willows that were in the vases (I am slow to put away the seashells), and in the dining room,
a huge vintage Wendell August Forge turkey platter replaces the floral platter that was originally there. On the living room sofa, the light linen pillows were replaced with
pillows of a more seasonal color scheme.
To welcome home family and guests, the entrance foyer also got a colorful bittersweet style wreath.
The house that I grew up in, was lovely....decorated with a more modern style. Danish modern and simple lines. No prints, no chintz, and no seasonal changes, except the front porch. We could usually count on seeing pumpkins and dried Indian corn for autumn and geraniums in the spring time. My mother was way ahead of her time when it came to decorating..no clutter, but each piece of furniture was gorgeous. Black silk couches...sleek in style. In the kitchen, we had a custom made booth in the best shade of orange with an oval table. It was perfect for our big family and of course fit the kitchen like it was built there. Maybe, that is why I enjoy the seasonal decorations all the more. It was actually a great foundation to build on. I adore vintage and antique, but like to mix them with clean simple lines. Now, for the seasonal decor on the porches...I am thinking cornstalks and pumpkins, and mums...and who knows what else.

Susan, the bittersweet with the mirror is stunning.
I, too, remember that horrible day eight years ago...wondering what was coming next. You are geographically closer to New York...we were concerned about our nuclear power plants.
So sad.

Your table cloth is beautiful. I love the bittersweet wreath with the turquoise vase and frame. I really need to get started on decorating for fall, everyone else has. I'm slow.

We first came to Middletown, NJ in Oct 2001. It was a town in the depths of a great sorrow. I think of that beautiful memorial garden next to the train station often and I thought of it especially on Friday. xo, suzy
