There is a very special blog named How Sweet the Sound, that has developed a new tradition called Pink Saturday. This Pink Saturday tradition of posting has become quite a phenomenon. We like the color pink because most pink things make us smile...they remind us of new born baby girls swaddled in little pink blankets and pretty pink roses that say I love you. For this particular Pink Saturday post, Beverly asks us to share a holiday tradition. It would honestly be difficult to share just one because after all, aren't we building new traditions year after year, taking one and adding to it? When my husband and I first married, we would drink a glass of champagne at midnight to bring in Christmas morning, and then we would exchange a gift. We would celebrate Christmas eve with his family, and get home very late and then would start our tradition.
Once we began our own family, the tradition of staying up late and enjoying that glass of champagne was laced with setting out the stockings and toys, but as tired as we were, we continued the tradition. Then, one year, our children were old enough to want to stay up with us and begin their own traditions and that quiet little moment with the lovely glass of champagne was gone. Poof...replaced by teenage laughter and all that comes with enjoying and loving your family. We are now on the precipice of what will eventually be an empty house where our children will choose to stay at their own homes and have their own traditions. Will we again go back to a tradition started many years ago, enjoyed and then abandoned for something else...or will we begin yet another new tradition to fit into this newly emerging slice of our lives? I love having traditions....that very special comfort of something to look forward to, year after year...and I love that everyone creates their own. Now I am excited to read about some other traditions at Beverly's How Sweet the Sound.
♥, Susan
What a romantic tradition, Susan! I will be interested to see if you return to it again. I love traditions, too, and we've had many over the years. I like to add new ones, too, to keep things fresh. :-)
Happy Pink Saturday...
XO,
Sheila

What a sweet tradition to share with your hubby. Maybe this year, you can fill the teenager's glasses with cider and have your champagne too.
Have a wonderful Christmas Susan!!

I find that as I get older I can't stay up much past nine p.m. So if you can stay up long enough to go back to your husband and wife tradition when the kids are off on their own, then go for it!

Oh Susan, I think this just goes to show us that traditions also can change with the times. How wonderful that you had that with your husband each year, but how blessed you were to be able to include your children later in life. I am sure once they are no longer a part of that special night, you will miss them and all the years you spent together. That is not lost, you and your husband will carry on and who knows what the next year will bring??? We are ever changing as our families grow, but we are still one family.....Merry Christmas my sweet friend and Happy Pink Saturday, I will see you in 2010, Char

Susan, after reading your blog post on my blog I had to come back in and let you know that you made me laugh out loud!! I used to make swedish meatballs every year and my children (now grown) hate them and always have. When I read that you make them, I just had to laugh.....yours must be much better than mine. Our kids do love the lefsa from Norway tho....must be the sugar!!! Thanks for the laugh, Char
