That title was a mouthful, but that is exactly the way this weekend has gone....busy with many surprises. This post is being linked to Susan's Met Monday at Between Naps on the Porch, because a real true metamorphosis occurred in our kitchen this weekend.
I surprised my husband and son by telling them that we would be painting the kitchen, and lucky me, was met with a reasonable response. My son's friends offered to help with the job, and we were done in just a few hours. Here is the very daring result of my whim.
The entire kitchen was painted a color called Vanilla, a very soft, creamy white, except for the far wall. We painted it black, and we really like it! You can see that in the first picture the kitchen was yellow...all of my kitchens have been yellow, for almost 30 years we have had a sunshine yellow kitchen, but not any more. The yellow kitchen thing started with a very tiny apartment kitchen when I lived in New York City. It was an original shade of apartment gray/white and made me a little dizzy, so to remedy the situation, I painted it bright yellow. It worked, and stuck with me for way too long. Thank you to Courtney, Becca, August, Brian, and of course my loving husband for helping with the painting.
What made me decide to make this change? I am not sure, but it could have had something to do with this guy... That's Eddie Ross. We stopped at the Home Show at Brookdale College,
and there he was talking about making custom changes to frames and vases. He is honestly one of the most clever and nicest people that I have had the pleasure to meet. He offered to have a picture taken with me and I had to show you... there we are...me and Eddie Ross!! (wish I had put on some makeup) If you don't know who Eddie Ross is, but he kind of looks familiar, he is everywhere in decorating land. He does the Martha Stewart Show, is in all of the magazines that we like...and he sells the best stuff in his Etsy shop. Click on his name and it will take you to his blog which is always interesting and inspiring...which might be why, when we went to pick up the paint I actually felt daring enough to paint the kitchen wall black! By the way, the person taking the picture was none other than Laura of Shore (house) Chic. We bumped into each other at the Home Show. I told you lots of surprises this weekend.
On my previous blog post, I mentioned a book signing and give away and wanted to update you on this. My son went over to Plum Cottage to pick up the books that Mark Stamaty signed for me, and wound up staying for two hours. On the inside cover of the book, he not only signed it, but drew us each an Elvis!! How cool is that? If you would like to have a chance to win this book then click back to this post, and leave a comment. You have until next Friday, the 22nd. Remember that 100% of his book sales from this weekend went to the Red Cross to help the Haitians.
I am also linking this post to Smiling Sallies Blue Monday ...and I know this is a stretch...for the blue mattes in the frames that Eddie made. If you want to see more fun posts, I suggest that you go over to Sally's blog.
♥, Susan
Now I'm bummed I couldn't make it to Plum Cottage!! For the Elvis sketch alone. :-)
Your wall looks GREAT in black! I think it really anchors the room nicely, and makes your Hoosier cabinet and white milkglass (and other) pieces really POP. Great job. Send the son and friends to my house, would ya? :-)

You have a one-of-a-kind kitchen! I love the black, and it was very brave to paint it that color. And your bravery really paid off. So dramatic. Love the walls with the floors.

Your new black wall in the kitchen looks great Susan! Your white pitchers and other pieces really stand out beautifully. It is gutsy to paint a wall black and you were truly rewarded!
Thank you for the introduction to Eddie Ross!
And for your kind comment, especially!!
Hope you are feeling well. You look good without makeup!

I have some friends that did this in their basement and I really liked it. one of them went with a dark blue color and in comparison I couldn't even tell the difference from black; except in direct light
