CATKINS, PUSSY WILLOWS, AND SPRINGTIME TRADITIONS

                       Tradition, the translation of doing the same thing time after time. This weekend, we went to see Fiddler on the Roof at our local high school. 
I must admit that I have seen this show before, actually twice. Once for my 13th birthday.  As a gift to me, my parents bought tickets on Broadway for the entire family...Grandmother and Grandfather included. For a 13 year old...well, lets just say it wasn't what I was hoping for, however, it turned out to be one of the highlights in my life. A few years ago we took our children to see the same show in New York...this time starring Harvey Fierstein and Rosey O'Donnell. They loved it! So, I went to the show at the high school with lowered expectations. I am delighted to tell you that the art of theater was not lost in translation here. The boy who starred as Tevye was a knock out. I am honestly in awe of his talent...his performance brought tears to my eyes, and I hope to see him on Broadway one day in the future. I love traditions, and I loved seeing the play for the third time. The original poster for the show on Broadway was done by the artist Marc Chagall.
                 This weekend was full of Springtime traditions and rituals, one of which was the pruning of the pussy willow tree. The catkins (the buds on the tree) were full and some were starting to blossom. The key here is to cut them right before they get to this point. In steps, we start with the denuded tree shown here.
Then we go to picking up the branches and bringing them into the screen porch 
to pick through. There was quite a tangle of branches this year, but I managed to pick out a few to form a nice couple of bouquets. The first vessel that I decided to fill with the branches was this hammered aluminum wastebasket with the dogwood motif made by Wendell August Forge. Because it is in excellent condition, I put a liner inside to keep it from getting scratched. There is no water involved here because the plan is to have the pussy willow branches dry out over time. The filled wastebasket has a sculptural quality to it, with the silvery tips of the catkins blending with the color of aluminum and the textural differences make this a bit of an eye catcher in our living room. I also love the way the bits of chartreuse in the tips match the color of the walls. There were enough left over to fill a Continental Chrysanthemum pattern vase with a few to give this little nook by the stairwell a nice accent. I am loving the shades of silver and grey with the coffee and browns. That wonderful tree has produced buds like these every year since we moved into this house thirteen years ago. Finding pussy willows in a vase in the Springtime in our house is now a time honored tradition.
