What is worse, the big wind or the unbelievable amount of rain? Together they were a formidable team and the havoc that was wreaked on not only the east coast of our nation but in upstate New England was and still is dreadful. So many homes were ruined, roadways and entire infrastructures are in shambles, and so many people are still without power. My family were lucky this time...we have power in our house, my parents in Pennsylvania are good, my daughter in Vermont had her first day of classes postponed due to major flooding on campus, but all in all we are a little soggier but okay.
Was there too much hype prior to the arrival of Irene? Yes and no...the Governor of NJ and the Mayor of NY were overly cautious and that turned out to be a very good thing. I believe that many lives were indeed saved by the professionals who helped our politicians make the calls that they did. There was, without question no need for the major television stations to constantly air "news" of what was happening. A big portion of what the news anchors had to say just went to show that they don't have a clue and just read from the cards. During a major weather event do we really need people standing by the beach being blown away or showing us that the ticket stand was blown over? Surely we are better than that. I don't see how it is helpful to have a news reporter standing in a foot of water just to show that it is there. I for one would like to see the reporting of big events to be by reliable and accountable people who are smart enough to come in out of the rain. Now this is just my two cents and others might thoroughly enjoy the slapstick humor that comes out of some kids running through the wet roads only to stop and moon those watching, however, I think that the producers of the news shows need to stop trying to copy one another and freshen their ideas of how to deal with situations such as these.
For those who have actually read todays rant...I thank you for bothering. Thank you so much for your concern about our well being. From here on it will be good news and blue skies.
♥, Susan
BRAVO! I agree. Life saving precautions yes...constant scenes of people playing in the storm? No. I think reporting the "fun" of people testing the winds takes away from the seriousness of this...it shows how callous we can be when some people have lost everything and some have died.

Hi Susan! Glad to here you weathered the storm. I worried bout you all. I am with ya on the reporters. Here in Cincinnati they do the same circus for Thunderstorms/Tornadoes granted Greater Cincy goes from here down south to almost Lexington, Ky...over west to Madison, Ind...up north to Dayton, Oh.....and east over to Portsmouth, Oh. but they keep goin on even once the storm has fizzled out.

"I for one would like to see the reporting of big events to be by reliable and accountable people who are smart enough to come in out of the rain."
That is so funny and so true! I love it!

So glad to know you're ok. We just got power back a few hours ago. I hear ya about the endless playing of people standing in the storm. It was getting rather monotonous. I feel bad for the poor people in Vermont who really got it hard - and for any of the folks who lost their lives in the storm.

Yea, Susan! Yet the public is so eager to see more, to catch a view of some dramatic calamity, that they keep watching, hoping to see something but that reporter swaying in the wind...and watchers are what news networks are built upon. I watched and watched, anxious to see how my friends along the coastal states were faring. I pulled up maps to make sure most of you were inland. But it has only been on FB that I got the REAL story of what you were all experiencing. It's been a real relief to learn you are all well...wet and weary, but safe.

OMG, you are sooo right. Also, I wish the TV reporters would stop giving air time to all the yahoos that show up down at the beach and play in the surf during a hurricane.

The Boss commented on how Geraldo kept showing footage of some storm from 1938 or there abouts....He said things couldn't be that bad if they had to have so much filler just to stay on the air.....We are happy that all our Jersey friends and family were spared worse conditions.....Geraldo was also upset that he was unable to be down reporting in Atlantic City.....He seemed to think that the public was expecting that from him,.....he's a hoot.

Hi Susan,
Glad to hear that all of your family are o.k. I agree, the news reporters love to emphasize on the worst. How about a little good news today. Seeing people blown away, is that really necessary? A little bit of ranting does the body good every now and then.

Hi Susan, I'm glad you got through the storm, I'm sure with all the winds and rains it had to be scary. I know all of us were glued to the T.V. and radio praying for all of our friends and family on the East Coast... smooth sailing from here on... hugs ~lynne~

Hi Susan!
So glad to hear all is well in your neck of the woods. Here in central PA we had some rain and some wind but nothing to speak of.
Since I'm a former Long Islander, I would have liked to see more coverage about Long Island but like you said, it seems the reporters all rode the same band wagon:)
Thanks for stopping by my blog. It is so nice to "meet" you. I too will "fav" and drop back often.
Thanks for sharing...

You have a very good point about news people needing to come out the the rain, Susan. I'm glad no harm came to you and yours.

Hi Susan! I'm with you on this rant! I kept calling the reporters stupid!! I also got so sick of hearing the same thing over and over, that I just had to shut the TV. (And I am sure that that is NOT what the stations want)
I'm glad you guys were ok.
